How it all started...
In 1924, Bethel Missionary Baptist Church was established in Mission City, Volusia County, located half a mile south of Highway 75. Today, this section of New Smyrna Beach, on SR 44 where the Walgreens Drug Store is currently located. The church was formed under the National Baptist Convention of the United States of America (Nashville, TN), the Florida General Baptist State Convention (Daytona Beach, FL), and the New Mount Northeast Coast Association.
From 1924-1926, church services were conducted under a brush arbor as the local streets were unnamed and unnumbered. t was also at this time the Church began construction on a building near the brush arbor. The building was a simple, oblong, wooden frame structure with no distinctive features, left unpainted, and with a large bell stationed outside. The building was completed in 1926 and dedicated in 1930.
In 1957, Bethel purchased the land at 1407 Enterprise Avenue and laid the foundation in 1959. In 1973, the building was completed and the congregation moved immediately the new location. During the process of time, the Church evolved to be known as Bethel Baptist Church.
In 2014, the Church purchased a building located at 312 N. Duss Street for its Academy and is currently used for Bethel Christian Preschool.
In 2015, Bethel purchased the lot east of their lot to extends the property line to Oleander Street.
In 2023, the Church purchased the house and lot located at 1409 Enterprise Ave. to extends the property line to Spruce Street.
