E5: Gardening With God w/ Joyce Dempsey

Aug 30, 2026  •  Pastor Angela Carter

What if the secret to a flourishing life was as practical as tending a garden? In this conversation, we explore one of the most grounding and revealing metaphors for spiritual growth: the garden. The central truth driving this discussion is deceptively simple yet profoundly challenging. Whatever we continually feed has the potential to grow. That applies to our faith, our fears, our relationships, and our purpose. Drawing from 1 Corinthians 3:6, where Paul describes planting and watering while God provides the increase, we are reminded that our role is faithfulness, not control. We do not manufacture the harvest. We tend the soil. From seed selection to soil quality, from weeding to pruning, every element of gardening becomes a mirror held up to our spiritual lives. We are invited to ask ourselves honest and sometimes uncomfortable questions. What are we feeding more, our faith or our fear? Are we spending five hours feeding anxiety and five minutes feeding our spirit? The parallels here are not just poetic. They are diagnostic. This is an overview that challenges us to stop praying for growth while starving the very things we want to see flourish.

Chapter 1: Whatever You Feed Will Grow 0:00 - 1:44

The central question is posed: what are we feeding in our lives? Just as a garden grows what it is given, our spiritual lives grow whatever we consistently nourish.

Chapter 2: Plant the Right Seeds and Tend Them Well 1:44 - 6:51

We cannot grow what we never plant, and a seed that is not properly cared for will die. Choosing the right seed and providing the right nutrients are essential to a healthy garden and a healthy spiritual life.

Chapter 3: Pull the Weeds Before They Take Root 6:51 - 12:08

Weeds that are left unchecked will choke out everything we have planted. Small offenses, bitterness, and negative patterns must be dealt with early before they develop deep roots.

Chapter 4: Trust the Master Gardener's Pruning 12:08 - 19:21

Pruning can look severe, but it is the gardener's way of making room for greater and healthier growth. God's pruning in our lives is not punishment but preparation for something more fruitful.

Chapter 5: Take Inventory of Your Garden 19:21 - 27:57

We are called to inspect what is currently growing in our lives and recommit to feeding what we want to flourish. The fruit of the Spirit grows as we remain connected to God and stay faithful in the process.
